What is the purpose of The Photo Guide (TPG)?

We aim to provide our members and the public with quality photography guides to aid you in taking better photos and to help us all learn more.

We have a mobile site to allow you to view your guidebook on the move and a map to help locate picturesque locations. We are still in a beta version at the moment, but the community is growing. By only giving trusted and respected photographers the ability to write guides it ensures that the content on the site remains relevant and of a high standard.

How can I add a guide to my guidebook?

New users cannot write guides, you first have to request and upgrade. To request an upgrade, login and then go to the write a guide page and complete the request form. On this form provide as much information as possible to allow us to make an informed decision on upgrading your account. If your request is successful admin will upgrade your account and you will be able to write guides.

If you already have an upgraded account then just go to the write a guide page and follow the steps. Note: the number of guides you are able to write is limited while the site is in beta. It is only for a short time so if you want to write a few guides just check back soon after each.

How do I register ?

To register head over to the register page.

I lost my password, what do I do?

Remember that your password is emailed to you upon registering; so first check your email. If you still can't log in go to the lost password page and request another. This is a two step process; the first email is to confirm you wish to reset and the second will send you a new password upon confirmation that you wish to reset it.

You can change your password at any time on the edit your settings page when logged in.

How do I view the mobile site?

The mobile site can be found at: http://mobile.thephotoguide.co.uk same as this site, you just need to be on a mobile device.

It is optimized for the iPhone and iPod Touch but should work on any recent smart phone. A full list of supported devices will be coming soon, why not let me know if it works on your phone by geting in touch.

Why can't I write a photo guide?

First you must be a registered user, then you need to request an account upgrade using the request an upgrade form.

If you have requested an upgrade but still cannot write guides then you need to wait for an email from our admin team.

If your request is successful you will be given access to write guides. If your application is un-successful reasons will be given in the email and you will need to make a request again when more evidence can be given to help support your request.

Who made TPG?

TPG started as the final year project of Adam Foster a student at the University of Huddersfield. TPG would be nothing without its great members a special thanks to all who are involved in the beta testing.

What technologies are used to build TPG?

TPG is built on open source technologies. Here is a list of everything used in the development:

  • Wordpress - as the CMS and backbones of the whole site
  • JQuery - framework for the JavaScript seen site wide
  • Google Maps API - for the maps!
  • TinyMCE - for WYSIWYG text editor
  • Gravatar - the global avatar for the profile images / icons
  • Theme My Login plugin - for customizing the login/register Wordpress pages
  • cforms - for the request form and contact form
  • Smart image resizer - for the resizing of all images

A huge thanks to everyone at each of these sites for the amazing technologies.

Is TPG not just another Flickr site?

No! We love flickr at TPG, but Flickr is a photo sharing site. We are all about guides rather than photos, our goal is to provide quality, information rich photography guides to our members and a friendly environment for our community.

Who has copyright of the images uploaded to TPG?

All images on TPG remain the property of the original author. You should not upload material to TGP that you do not hold the ownership for. TGP accepts no responsibility for images you upload but also claims no ownership of them.

How can I add a profile picture / avatar icon?

You need to associate your email address with gravatar, it's as simple as that.

A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things. Avatars help identify your posts on blogs and web forums, so why not on any site?

How do I delete a guide or delete my account?

Only the admin team can delete guides, you should contact TPG to request a guide be deleted and explain why.

To delete your account get in touch but we will be sad to see you go! Remember that a deleted account cannot be re-activated.

Where else can I find TPG; on twitter? Flickr? RSS?

You can find TPG on Twitter. We have an RSS feed. We will soon be on Flickr also!
